The Transistor

The transistor is a semiconductor device that amplifies and switches electronic signals. Small, cheap, and reliable, it replaced the vacuum tube and became the fundamental building block of all modern electronics.

The transistor was a Bell Labs achievement: Bardeen and Brattain demonstrated the first point-contact transistor (1947), and Shockley invented the more practical junction transistor (1948). The three shared the 1956 Nobel Prize. Earlier field-effect patents by Julius Lilienfeld anticipated the concept.

What counts as the invention: The point-contact device (Bardeen/Brattain) and the junction transistor (Shockley) are distinct; both emerged from a coordinated laboratory program.
