Precision Machine Tools (Screw-Cutting Lathe)

The industrial screw-cutting lathe with a slide rest and lead screw let machinists cut accurate, repeatable threads and cylindrical parts. It is the 'machine that makes machines' — the foundation of precision manufacturing.

Henry Maudslay is central to the precision screw-cutting lathe, but he built on Jacques de Vaucanson's earlier slide-rest ideas and John Wilkinson's accurate boring machine (which also made Watt's cylinders possible). Machine-tool progress was a chain of contributors.
