Interchangeable parts are components made uniformly enough that any one will fit any assembly, without hand-fitting. This principle underlies mass production and modern maintenance and repair.

Popular history credits Eli Whitney, but the concept was demonstrated earlier by Honoré Blanc in France, and Whitney's own muskets were not truly interchangeable. The practical 'American system of manufactures' was realized cumulatively at U.S. armories and by engineers like Marc Brunel (Portsmouth Block Mills) and Henry Maudslay.
What counts as the invention: Whitney's role is better described as promotion/popularization than invention. Achieving genuine interchangeability took decades of tooling and gauging work by many.
