The Electric Telegraph
The electric telegraph sent coded messages over wires, collapsing the time it took information to cross distances from weeks to minutes — the first electrical communication network.

The telegraph was developed in parallel: Cooke and Wheatstone patented a working system in Britain (1837) for the railways, while Morse and Alfred Vail developed the single-wire system and Morse code in the U.S. (1844). Earlier work by Gauss, Weber, and Schilling contributed. Vail's share of the code is often underplayed.
