Vulcanized Rubber
Vulcanization treats natural rubber with sulfur and heat so it stays elastic across temperatures instead of melting or cracking. It made rubber a reliable engineering material.

Charles Goodyear discovered the sulfur-and-heat process (c. 1839) and patented it in the U.S. (1844), while Thomas Hancock patented vulcanization in Britain slightly earlier (1843). The two are generally treated as independent, with priority disputed.
What counts as the invention: Discovery (Goodyear) and separate national patents (Goodyear in the U.S., Hancock in Britain) are distinct threads of the same advance.
