Michael Faraday and (independently) Joseph Henry discovered electromagnetic induction in 1831; Ányos Jedlik built early rotary machines; and the practical AC induction motor was developed nearly simultaneously by Nikola Tesla and Galileo Ferraris in the 1880s. This is a chain of parallel, cumulative work, not one inventor.

What counts as the invention: Discovery of induction (Faraday/Henry) is separate from the engineering of practical dynamos and the AC motor (Tesla/Ferraris).
