Antisepsis & Germ Theory in Surgery

Antisepsis prevents infection by destroying microorganisms during medical procedures. Combined with germ theory, it turned survivable surgery into safe surgery and slashed post-operative deaths.

Ignaz Semmelweis showed hand disinfection cut deadly childbed fever (1847) but was rejected in his lifetime; Louis Pasteur established germ theory; and Joseph Lister applied it to create antiseptic surgery (1867). The advance was cumulative and initially resisted.

What counts as the invention: Empirical hygiene (Semmelweis), the underlying science (Pasteur), and its surgical application (Lister) are distinct contributions.
